Former India captains Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, along with newly-appointed ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer, are set to join the Indian squad in New Delhi ahead of the much-anticipated tour of Australia later this month.

According to PTI sources from the BCCI, the team will depart for Australia in two separate batches on October 15, with travel logistics and business class ticket availability determining the schedule. One group will fly in the morning, while the second batch leaves in the evening. Kohli and Rohit, not part of the current Test series against West Indies, are expected in the capital either on the day of departure or a day prior, depending on personal schedules.

The squad will first land in Perth to open their three-match ODI series against Australia on October 19, followed by a five-match T20I series. Despite speculation over their ODI futures, both Rohit and Kohli were included in the Australia ODIs. Rohit, however, will no longer lead as Shubman Gill has been appointed the new ODI captain.

Shreyas Iyer, the newly-appointed vice-captain, who missed the Asia Cup T20s, is expected to play a crucial role in India’s limited-overs setup under Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir. To foster team spirit before the long tour, Gambhir hosted a team dinner at his Rajinder Nagar residence in New Delhi, providing an opportunity for the squad to bond ahead of the overseas assignment.

ODI Squad’s Schedule and Australia Tour Preparations

The ODI-bound players currently engaged in domestic or international fixtures may be given a short break before regrouping in the capital, depending on the outcome of the ongoing second Test against the West Indies (October 10–14).

India’s upcoming tour of Australia will serve as a key preparation phase for the 2026 T20 World Cup, with several senior players, including Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, eager to make an impact.
