“It’s Time for Him to Rest”: Former CSK Star’s Strong Opinion on MS Dhoni’s IPL Future

Chennai Super Kings, a team with five championship titles and 12 playoff appearances, struggled to live up to its former glory as it was eliminated from the playoff race in the group stage. Former India cricketer and 2007 T20 World Cup winner Joginder Sharma believes it is time for CSK legend MS Dhoni to “take a rest.” After the team’s designated captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the tournament, Dhoni stepped in to lead the struggling side.

Following a disappointing campaign in the 18th season, the five-time champions failed to qualify for the playoffs, sparking speculation about Dhoni’s future in the lucrative Indian Premier League.

Rumors about MS Dhoni’s retirement ignited when his family was spotted at Chepauk during Chennai Super Kings’ match against Delhi Capitals last month. The 43-year-old’s drop down the batting order intensified speculation, especially after CSK head coach Stephen Fleming admitted that Dhoni can’t bat “10 overs running full stick.”

Joginder Sharma, famous for bowling the final over to help India win the 2007 T20 World Cup, feels it might be time for Dhoni to end his 18-year career in the IPL. “Considering Mahi’s fitness level, he should play up to prove his fitness, but I believe it is time for him to rest,” Joginder told ANI.

After Dhoni’s crucial contribution in Chennai’s recent win over Kolkata Knight Riders, he addressed his retirement plans cautiously. He said he needs the next six to eight months post-IPL to assess if his body can handle the demands. “Nothing to decide now, but the love and affection I have seen is excellent,” he added during the post-match presentation.

Despite fitness concerns, Dhoni broke multiple records in IPL Season 18 — including playing in his 400th T20 match, becoming the oldest Player of the Match, and securing the most wins as captain. Throughout CSK’s 2023 IPL title run, Dhoni played every match, leading from the front. However, he recently underwent knee surgery to address an injury that affected him for much of the season.
