BCCI Extends Ajit Agarkar’s Tenure as Chairman of Selectors

Just two days after announcing India’s Asia Cup squad, Ajit Agarkar received a major vote of confidence from the BCCI, with his contract as chairman of selectors extended until June 2026. The extension, reportedly finalised before IPL 2025, reflects the board’s satisfaction with his handling of Indian cricket’s transitional phase.

Since taking charge in June 2023, Agarkar has overseen a period of both success and generational change. Under his leadership, India ended its long ICC title drought, winning the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy, while reaching the 2023 ODI World Cup final at home.

Agarkar has also managed key leadership transitions, handing Test captaincy to Shubman Gill and appointing Suryakumar Yadav for the T20I side. Additionally, the team navigated the phased retirement of stalwarts such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin, with Kohli and Rohit focusing on ODIs and Ashwin stepping away from all formats. The BCCI’s extension signals strong trust in Agarkar’s strategic vision during this transformative period for Indian cricket.

One selector in Agarkar’s committee to lose his job

The current selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, also includes SS Das, Subroto Banerjee, Ajay Ratra, and S Sharath. However, the BCCI’s annual general body meeting in September may bring changes, particularly to Sharath’s position, as he nears the four-year tenure limit under board norms.

The board is reportedly inviting fresh applications for his replacement, though no final decisions have been made regarding Das and Banerjee. Officials appear broadly satisfied with the existing panel and may limit changes to a single position.

In addition, the BCCI plans to open applications for new appointments to the senior women’s and junior men’s selection committees. Neetu David, chair of the women’s panel, along with Arati Vaidya and Mithu Mukherjee, will complete their five-year tenures this season. The junior men’s panel—currently comprising Thilak Naidu, Ranadeb Bose, Harvinder Singh Sodhi, Pathik Patel, and Krishen Mohan—could also see a refresh to prepare for an intense international schedule ahead. These steps indicate the board’s intention to maintain continuity while ensuring opportunities for new talent in cricket administration.
