He began the tournament strongly, scoring a century against Bangladesh in the opening game, but later went through a lean patch. In the final against Sri Lanka, Kohli played a crucial knock of 35 runs, helping India recover from 31/2 to 114/3 in a 275-run chase. India won the final by six wickets.
2. ICC Champions Trophy 2013
Kohli’s next major achievement came in the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 in England, where he had already established himself as one of India’s most reliable ODI batsmen. He scored 176 runs in five matches at an average of 58.66 and a strike rate of 96. Although Kohli had limited opportunities due to the strong opening partnerships between Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma, his most crucial innings came in the final, where he contributed 43 runs off 34 balls to help India set a challenging total of 129 runs in the 20-over match. India won the match by five runs.
3. ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024
Virat Kohli’s first and only T20 World Cup win came in 2024. Despite a difficult tournament, he stepped up when it mattered most, scoring 76 runs off 59 balls in the final to help India post a competitive total of 176/7 in their first innings. Kohli had managed only 75 runs across his first seven innings, but his performance in the final earned him the Player of the Match award. Following the win, he announced his retirement from T20I cricket.
4. ICC Champions Trophy 2025
Kohli secured his second ICC Champions Trophy title in 2025 in Dubai. He ended the tournament as India’s second-highest run-scorer, accumulating 218 runs in five matches. Beyond the stats, Kohli’s performances were crucial in key moments. Two of his standout knocks were against Pakistan in the group stage, where he scored an unbeaten century to guide India to a six-wicket victory, and in the semi-final against Australia, where he scored 84 runs in a challenging 265-run chase.
