Several bowlers have delivered standout performances on their ICC Champions Trophy debut. A bowler claimed 5 wickets in a 10-over spell, another took 5 wickets for 42 runs, and a third picked up 6 wickets in just 9 overs. These remarkable feats showcase debutants’ significant impact in major tournaments.

Mohammed Shami 5-53 vs Bangladesh, 2025

Champions Trophy

Senior fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who has been a part of India’s ODI setup since 2013, made his ICC Champions Trophy debut in the 2025 edition during India’s opening match against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Stadium.

Shami made an immediate impact, dismantling Bangladesh’s top order and continuing his dominance throughout his 10-over spell. He struck in his first over, removing opener Soumya Sarkar for a duck. He followed it up by dismissing Mehidy Hasan Miraz and then took his 200th ODI wicket by removing Jaker Ali.

Shami’s brilliance continued as he dismissed Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Taskin Ahmed to complete his sixth five-wicket haul in ODIs. He finished with impressive figures of 5-53 from 10 overs, marking the second-best debut performance by any bowler in ICC Champions Trophy history.

Varun Chakaravarthy 5-42 vs New Zealand, 2025

A week after Mohammed Shami’s remarkable spell, Indian spinner Varun Chakravarthy delivered a match-winning performance with a five-wicket haul for just 42 runs against New Zealand at the Dubai International Stadium. This was only his second ODI appearance and his first in the ICC Champions Trophy, where he spun a web around the New Zealand batters to help India secure a 44-run victory.

Defending a target of 250, Chakravarthy gave India an early breakthrough by dismissing dangerous opener Will Young. He then dismissed all-rounders Glenn Phillips and Michael Bracewell, followed by a vital wicket of captain Mitchell Santner. Chakravarthy completed his impressive spell by having tailender Matt Henry caught by Virat Kohli, marking his first-ever five-wicket haul in ODIs.

His brilliant performance earned him the ‘Player of the Match’ award, acknowledging his pivotal role in India’s dominant win.

Josh Hazlewood 6-52 vs New Zealand, 2017

Australian pace bowler Josh Hazlewood made his mark in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy after missing out on the 2013 edition. In Australia’s opening match against New Zealand at Edgbaston, Birmingham, Hazlewood shared the new ball with Mitchell Starc and quickly made an impact, dismissing Martin Guptill in the sixth over.

His sensational spell continued as Hazlewood took five more wickets in his return spells during the slog overs. He dismissed Neil Broom and James Neesham before claiming three wickets in four balls, including tailenders Adam Milne, Mitchell Santner, and Trent Boult. This outstanding performance earned him figures of 6-52 from nine overs, setting a new personal best in ODIs.

This remarkable spell remains the second-best bowling figures in a Champions Trophy innings and the best ever by a debutant. However, the match was unfortunately abandoned due to rain, preventing Hazlewood from securing a well-deserved victory for Australia.
